Garry Brander studied HND Graphic Design and graduated from Anniesland College, Glasgow in 2007. During his time at college he was named winner of the “stagecoach design competition” and also won “the trades house of glasgow” 2 dimensional art advanced award. Later in the year he started attending the Glasgow School of Art where he graduated in 2011 with a BA Honours in fine art.
After a sell out degree show Brander established a strong status in the art community proving that he was defiantly a newcomer to be reckoned with. He has showcased his work in several exhibitions in Glasgow, London and even had his work featured in the ‘new faces’ exhibition at the leith gallery, edinburgh.
The subject of his paintings is abandoned structures surrounded by a barren landscape.  The inspiration for his work comes from his love of architecture in its most simple forms such as huts, shacks and barns. His work captures his admiration for these elements which he brings to life using bold colours and light.
His simplistic style of painting is often compared to Edward Hopper and his use of surreal landscapes and rich colours are very much reminiscent of Salvador Dali. Despite these comparisons Brander has successfully created an instantly recognisable style and his subject matter gives his work a uniqueness that is guaranteed to catch the eye of any art lover.

Dominika Majowicz (Mayovich) was born in Poland in 1986.  At the age of 16 she left her family home to study at Boarding Art School in Rzeszow. She finished her 4 year course passing GCSEs with extra art examinations that gave her so-called title of and Artist (degree recognised in Poland).
In 2006  she moved to Oxford in England where she accomplished Art Foundation Course at Oxford and Cherwell Valley College. In 2007 she started to attend Glasgow School of Art. After 4 years she graduated with BA Honours Degree in Fine Art (Painting/ Printmaking).
With a sell-out degree show Dominika decided to stay in Scotland and pursue her carrier. One of her final pieces was chosen and bought for the collection by Friends of Glasgow School of Art Club.
Now Dominika is Scotland based figurative and portrait artist. In her paintings she uses vivid contrast between strong confident and bright areas of colour in opposition to soft natural skin tones which gives her portraits unusual, expressive look.
In some of her series of paintings she tends to experiment a lot with various layers of paint, creating wide array of textures.

“Just Jack”

Jack Nicholson

The Art School was a buzz with talk of a new film in 1969. Unusually it was being screened at His Majesty’s Theatre on Aberdeen’s beautiful Union Terrace Gardens. Much of the attention was focused on a new actor to most of us, the guy playing the lawyer in “Easy Rider,” and was my first sighting of Jack Nicholson. In a cameo role he was thoroughly magnetic in that film and (along with the soundtrack) stole everyone’s hearts.

Over his career he has built a catalogue of memorable performances in some of the epoque’s standout movies. We probably have a common consciousness about these so I won’t list them. Suffice to say that some of his lines keep finding space in my memory, and a scene will often drift through my head. If there is a duff Nicholson movie out there I haven’t seen it yet. Those expressive looks, his eyebrow gestures, the dismissive eyes, his raffish attitude and totally unkempt hair are Jack’s trademarks. By all accounts he is the sum of many of his parts in real life, and you really wouldn’t want to cross swords with this amazing man.

He has added colour and spice to my time here, and I’m grateful to him.

Van certainly splits opinion. I love the guy, I love his soulfulness and his disregard for current trends. He is truly enigmatic and thought provoking, demonstrating to me that soul is not always upbeat and joyful. Van can be grumpy as hell but still in touch with an otherness that most have lost sight of. I love his love of all things Caledonia. I love the way he reminds me of my late father-in-law.
In this image Van’s glasses are mysterious. He’s looking into the mystic, into mirrors, he’s in some wonderland place that only he can discern. That’s what attracted me to this view of the Belfast man and I had to find some way of making it appear a bit magical. Chalks, watercolours and careful smudging.

Mick
“Lose Your Dreams”

This is a particularly animal Mick, the caveman looking for a carcass to feed his woman. His animal magnetism is unmissable and no-one would miss this guy entering a bar. I remember the first time I saw him, on “Ready Steady Go” back in 1963, when you could see Cathy McGowan going weak at her knees during the performance. 5 fresh faced English kids doing some blues and reworks of favourite songs… they were instantly marked down in my mind as a band to follow.

Their musical path has echoed the lines on their faces. It’s been a wild and turbulent journey for them. I do wonder what Mick would look like if he had followed a career in economics? Speculation perhaps, but I don’t think he would be this amazing.

Terry Bradley was born in Belfast in 1965. His early life was spent growing up just off the notorious Shankill Road where his mother tried to keep him inside and away from the “Troubles” outside their front door.  Bradley found a form of escapism reading Herge’s Adventures of Tin Tin and his work is still influenced by the black lines of the vivid drawings that illustrated the collection of books that he gradually acquired. He also spent hours in the attic room of his house listening to the then new pirate radio station Radio Luxembourg and imagined his travels and the exotic world beyond the realities of Belfast in the 1970’s.  From an early age Bradley discovered that drawing calmed his nerves and that he could loose himself in the complexities of observing people and then recreating them on paper.
After a move out of the city in the late 70’s Bradley entered a large comprehensive secondary school and was instantly the outsider. Art and English were his best subjects and the rest of the time was spent staying out of trouble. Art was never mentioned as a possible career, and the most obvious next move was to one of the large factories on Belfast’s outskirts
Bradley however knew that this was not for him and with absolutely no experience or history between them Terry and his two brothers set up and ran a factory of their own.
They manufactured and exported full lead mouth blown crystal and set out to compete with the leading crystal manufacturers. With orders coming thick and fast the young Bradley’s were doing extremely well until a combination of cash flow and high rent and wages meant the company closed it’s doors after four years.
Terry then turned to his interest in art and fashion. Always having an eye for the aesthetic Terry opened his own clothes shop in the trendy university area of the city. Called “Retro” the shop was soon a leader in fashion for the clothes conscious of Belfast.
Terry’s was the first shop to stock Red or Dead shoes and he had a regular Saturday DJ playing in the tiny outlet. He sold hand painted jeans and one off shirts and jackets that he imported from all over the world.
A few years later and Terry needed a new direction, the shop was not fulfilling the creative side of Terry and he made the move to Dublin in 1989. Bradley stayed with what he knew however and initially started modelling clothes for friends to make ends meet. During this whole time however Terry was busy painting and drawing in his spare time. He still found it was how he relaxed and how he escaped from the pressures of his everyday life. A chance conversation with John Reynolds, the owner of the famous PoD club in Dublin, lead to Bradley’s first solo art exhibition. The night was a huge success and Terry finally started to make some money from the one thing that had stayed with him all his life.
During the following years Terry has gradually become more comfortable with the title of “artist” and his work has gone from strength to strength.He now exhibits in Dublin, Belfast, London and Spain and is planning his first solo exhibition for the USA later this year. His natural aversion to the establishment has made it difficult for him to fit into a typical art gallery mould and he still likes to exhibit in the bars and clubs that he feels most at home in. He sells his work all around the world and his art has been used by Nokia for the cover of a limited edition mobile phone.
Bradley has now reached a place in his life that he is comfortable with. He is able to paint full time and explore the voyeuristic side of his nature that he first discovered as a child observing the dangerous world around him His work mostly centres on strong women and ex models in Dublin and more recently Paris. His latest work is inspired by the era of the Belle Époque in France and the contrasts and similarities with the Burlesque dancers of New York.
He has also recently started exploring the colourful characters from the Belfast dockland area know as Sailortown. At its heyday 100years ago the dock workers were famous around the world for their hard drinking and hard working attitude. Bradley finds that these paintings now balance the world of burlesque women that he paints.

Come wind rain or shine, Darren will take out a sketch pad and paint the atmosphere of the scenery before him. His technique is about light, shade, darkness and colour working with layer upon layer of paint,  before scraping back selected colours. The immediacy of the often exceptionally fine glazing layers of colour can only be observed directly from the material. The observational nature of the pictures cannot reveal itself unless the observer allows himself to become actively involved, a nature which cannot be communicated verbally.
