arriving this week in our galleries from spain are these stunning new volegov pieces.
a very well established artist originating from russia. volegov has become the latest artist to join the breeze collection. volegov was born in khabarovsk, russia. he began painting at the age of three and his talent was noted repeatedly throughout his adolescence.
after attending the art school “krivoj rog” and having served in the army, volegov was admitted to the lvov polygraphic institute in the former soviet union. he then went on to practice and win international competitions for poster art.
notable russian publishing houses sought his talents to design posters, cassette covers and cd’s for musical groups. while working with the publishing houses he continued to work on his paintings and participate in several exhibitions.
in the 1990’s volegov traveled to europe to become a street artist painting tourists portraits on the streets of barcelona, berlin, vienna and many more. it is with this experience that he further honed his skills in depicting the human form. his art has evolved into the striking figurative work he creates today. using a vibrant color palette and bold strokes to create evocative images that possess a timeless sensibility.

AJ Callan
Born in Glasgow in 1958, my childhood was surrounded by the new confidence and optimism of 60′s Britain. Carnaby Street, the Beatles and jobs for everyone! I was constantly exposed to new ideas, sounds and fashions. Everyone was encouraged to let their imagination run free. From a young age I immersed myself in art. I was just as happy sitting with a drawing pad for hours on end as I was playing football with my brothers. My mother was responsible for my interest in art; being an avid crossword fan she used to doodle whilst solving the cryptic clues and I picked up on this from an early age. At school I was as excited about the art lessons as I was about dinner time.
I often forgot to come home on time after becoming totally engrossed in a painting. Art College followed school and I spent a total of 5 years studying both fine art and graphic design. On leaving college, I entered the world of advertising. Many years working on commercial material did not erode my passion for fine art. I continued to produce pieces in my own time, experimenting with different medium and subject matter. I realised that in order to follow my dream I had to make an important decision. I chose to commit myself fully to my passion for fine art and became a full time artist in 2005, a decision I have never regretted.
In every day situations I tend to take mental snapshots of inanimate and animate subjects. It might be a knowing glance between two people or a reaction to a surprise. I have frequent brainstorming sessions, often with a glass of red wine in my hand – it is amazing how many of these snapshots then resurface for use in my sketches! My work combines the real and the imaginary and this is reflected in the finished pieces. My early inspirations are wide and varied, from seeing the Yellow Submarine animation as a child, to reading about Leonardo Da Vinci at school.
I never cease to be amazed by Leonardo’s thirst for knowledge and his technical ability. Other influences include, Charles Renee Mackintosh with his uniquely romantic approach to his work and Joseph Wright for his stunning mastery of lighting. I aim to create art which generates a warm reaction from the viewer, to mirror my emotions when creating them. I am a positive person by nature and a complete optimist, my wine glass is always half full! I am as comfortable creating three dimensional works as two dimensional. The sheer pleasure of creating something totally unique is immeasurable.
I produce masses of rough sketches in short energetic bursts. I have a good idea in my mind of colour schemes but I try not to be too specific before the event. This prevents me from stifling the creative process during execution of the finished item. I go through a range of emotions when working. Excitement is always first when an idea pops into my head. Anxiety and fear follows closely as the illustration starts to build.
This is where my experience and confidence is required to see it through. I have learned to trust my instincts. Finally there is exhilaration when the finished picture matches my expectations. I frequently walk away from my work during production to stay fresh and objective. Once each piece is finished, I leave it for a couple of days before re-visiting it. This is when I will make tweaks where necessary.
My day usually starts at around 7.30am. It is very rare that we use an alarm as we instinctively wake up at about the same time each day. I will get up and feed our two ‘ragdoll’ cats, and bring my wife Mary a cup of tea before taking her to work. Back at my studio I will look at finished work before continuing with my latest project. The studio is in a perfect position, on a south facing hillside, so I have plenty of natural light. I must have music whilst working and my taste varies considerably, as does my music collection. I also have a piano and will tinkle the ivories to the best of my ability, striving to improve my skills when time permits. The fields surrounding our home are full of horses, cattle and sheep (but no pigs!).
I am fortunate in that I overlook the Pennines, so inspiration is always close at hand. As soon as I settle down to work, the cats settle down to sleep. I usually have a short break for lunch and like to groom the cats – being pedigree ragdolls they employ me as their valet! I find this very therapeutic and so do they. Work ends anywhere between 5 and 8pm after which I collect Mary and we have our evening meal together. My mind is always active, often causing me to wake up in the early hours to sketch out a few ideas. If I cannot sleep then I will tackle a crossword to knock me out.

Bob Dylan
“Mr. Zimmerman I Presume”
He’s grizzly and wrinkly, but the face says a lot about how he’s been observing all these years. You can see him plying up and down the Mississippi a century and a half back, watching the high rollers at the tables on the river boats. He’s thinking about that girl in St. Louis, and wondering if her eyes are still blue.
The words are Dylan reflecting on how he came to folk music, from the simple pop tunes of late 50s/early 60s US charts. If I ever have the time I’m going to take a month going through his back catalogue chronologically, on an amazing journey down Highway 61 through the American landscape of hope, dreams and despair.

Mick Jagger
“laughs like Jagger”
A jovial Mick, looking forward to a Saturday at the Lord’s Test Match? He’s just so iconic and earth worn. If faces were landscapes, Mick would be the Grand Canyon. An insect would toil to get from ear to ear over the course of one night… assuming he ever sleeps that is. There’s not a day goes by that I don’t give the Stones a blast in my headphones, and the strange thing is the older I get the more I play the early stuff. At the moment I’m reliving “Aftermath” on a worryingly frequent level. I’m 15 once more, innocent and free (apart from impending O Levels). When the 1949ers hit old folks’ homes we’ll all be lost in this music, girating our zimmers at fading memories.

Keith Richards
Keith..still rockin
A stoned Stone, I suspect, looking forward to being anywhere. I see Keef more as a glacial feature, with new fissures opening almost on a daily basis to let liquids drain.
I first saw the Stones in Aberdeen’s Capitol Cinema, 1965, and it was pretty wild. I’ll always recall Keef writing in his book…”Hamilton, just outside Glasgow…they put a chicken wire fence in front of us because of the sharpened pennies and beer bottles they flung at us – the guys didn’t like the chicks screaming at us. They had dogs parading inside the wire.” I don’t remember any of that in Aberdeen, but I do recall a baying mob round the back in Justice Mill Lane, howling up at their dressing room. An unpleasant waif hurled a mini boulder through their window, only for Mick to hurl it back into the mob with frightening gusto. When you read Keef’s recollections, it’s little wonder such frustrations manifested themselves.

Elvis
“The Boy From Tupelo”
Colonel Parker controlled Elvis’s image to such an extent after he became his manager that photographs of him are very studio orientated and stage managed. This is such a refreshing image of the young man with his guard down, totally relaxed after a few drinks? I think it shows him in touch with his feminine side, with that balance of sexuality that drove women crazy. There are a couple of shots that I know about taken at the same time, possibly in the late 50s with Elvis just turning 20 years old. I imagine the scene in a hot Memphis bar, with a friend who owns a new Brownie camera and they’re just fooling around. Outside it’s a hundred in the shade, and the black folks are making their way home on segregated buses.
